Route East

Nothing To Lose

This long awaited album from hard working local rock 3-piece Route East took 2 months to record at Astar Studios in Heywood and their efforts have certainly paid off.

Produced by Mercury prize nominee Andy Ross, “Nothing To Lose” is a collection of rock songs similar in style to Bon Jovi. You won’t find the big power chords, falsetto vocals or overdone riffs here, just controlled melodies very well played. The first track, Won’t Pretend is a solid tune which would make a good single and that is probably the reason this particular track was selected for a compilation album distributed with Music Magazine earlier this year. There is good use made of acoustic guitar on Nothing Wrong, Just Moving Along and the ballad I’ll Be There is great one for holding your cigarette lighter aloft to.

The up tempo Right and Wrong is good time rock’n’roll but the stand out track for me is Live For Today.  I’ve always thought that Mark Williams had one of the best rock voices in the area and I’m pleased its been captured at its best on this track. Martin Shepherd’s bass locks in nicely with the drums throughout (with some great runs) and Bradley D Brown finishes the whole thing off with three tremendous drum breaks at the end. Excellent stuff.

“Nothing To Lose” is a very professionally packaged 10 track CD which not only showcases Mark Williams’ maturing songwriting talents but is also a clear statement of intent. Route East know where they want to be, of that there is no doubt, and it seems to me that all they need is that slice of luck and the all important good fortune to be in the right place at the right time for them to be able to take the next step up.
